The producers of Masterchef are to launch a new TV show that aims to crown the best bakery in the UK.

Over four weeks and 20 episodes, ITV1’s new search will look for baking excellence, handing one bakery this new award.

To find Britain’s Best Bakery, the show has started a nationwide hunt, sampling the delicacies of independent, family-run and/ or community bakeries – and it has appealed to the readers of British Baker to get in touch.

Two big names from the baking world will judge the competition and ultimately crown Britain’s Best Bakery and you can follow the show on Twitter via bestbakery2012.

Josh Elliott, series producer, told British Baker: “You’ll need to be in it to win it and we are eager to hear from as many fantastic bakeries as possible.

“Our bakeries are the warm and delicious heart of our local communities. We hope to showcase the Best British Bakers; their skills and passions for creating all manner of delicious breads, cakes, pastries and pies.”

He added: “Britain’s Best Bakery will also reveal fascinating stories about us and our history through these pastries, breads and cakes. We’ll get to know the people who create and bake them, the stories behind them, the places to find them, and the people who love to eat them. We’ll meet traditional baking families with top-secret recipes passed down the generations and hear stories of immigration through Chinese, Turkish and Greek bakeries and the amazing baked goods they make to recreate a taste of home.”
