British Baker has published the names of those MPs who voted against the amendment to the 20% tax on hot takeaway bakery products.

The vote, tabled by Liberal Democrat MP Stephen Gilbert of St Austell and Newquay, took place in the House of Commons last month and was narrowly defeated by 35 oppositional votes.

Of the 295 votes opposing the amendment, 262 came from the Conservative party and 33 from members of the Liberal Democrats.

A total of 260 MPs voted in favour of the amendment, including 228 representatives from the Labour Party and four Liberal Democrat members. Other MPs supporting the change to the ‘pasty tax’ included individuals from the Scottish National Party, Green Party and Democratic Unionist Party.

Gilbert, who delivered the proposed amendment, said: "No new Order shall be made under section 30(4) or 31(2) of the Value Added Tax Act 1994 which shall affect baked products when no attempt is made to keep the product hot for consumption."

In the last issue of British Baker (18 May), Gilbert said a second amendment could go ahead as early as the end of June in an attempt to overturn the 20% VAT.
