Frances Quinn has won the fourth series of The Great British Bake Off.
Beating Ruby Tandoh and Kimberley Wilson in last night’s final (22 October) with her Showstopper Bake, a three-tiered wedding cake inspired by Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream, Quinn said she never “truly believed” she would win the show.
Quinn, who studied textile design at Nottingham Trent, was praised by both Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood for her flavours and style.
On the show, Berry said: “Frances has great attention to detail and her bakes improved each week. We are very proud of her.”
Hollywood added: “Frances is a deserved winner. When it came to the Showstopper, she beat the other two hands down. She not only gave us the style, but she gave us the substance too.”
Earlier in the show, Quinn was praised for her rainbow savoury picnic pie, but was later placed third in the Technical Challenge: sweet and savoury pretzels.
Challenged with producing a wedding cake in six hours, the three tiers in Quinn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream version contained carrot cake filled with pistachio and apricot, Victoria lemon sponge and ginger and rhubarb for the base.
This year’s final averaged 8.4m viewers, peaking at 9.1m.
