Warburtons has been granted planning permission to build a new £20m alternative sandwich breads bakery in Burnley.
The new plant will produce Warburtons’ range of sandwich alternatives, including its wraps and sandwich thins products.
A 35-week build programme, given the go-ahead last week, is due to start this month and the plant is expected to be operational by January 2015. Warburtons said the development would create 60 jobs.
Neil Campbell, managing director at Warburtons, said: “We recognise that consumer needs and tastes are changing and we must ensure we are fit to meet their needs, now and into the future.”
The new site is situated next to Warburtons’ existing site in Burnley, Lancashire. Warburtons currently produces wraps and sandwich thins at its plants in Bristol and Bolton, which will remain in service, a spokeswoman said. It currently produces over £1m-worth of these products each week.
Burnley was chosen as the next location for investment due to its supply chain links and suitability for build, the company said.
