The winners of the National Cupcake championships will be revealed tomorrow after the judging is held today (14 September) at British Bakels’ headquarters in Bicester.

A team of judges will assess cupcakes from 60 finalists and mark them on appearance, originality and, most importantly, taste.

The 60 bakers have made it to the final stage across six categories: Classic; Made with Chocolate; Made with Alcohol; Free From: Seasonal and Children’s.

The competition coincides with National Cupcake Week, now in its seventh year, which starts today (14 September) and runs until 20 September.

According to statistics published by Bako, spend on cupcakes in 2013 increased by 7.5% year on year to hit £30.9m. Meanwhile in 2014 cupcake sales were projected to rise by approximately 20% over the next five-year period.

The event is sponsored by Barry Callebaut, online ordering service Hello and … and hosted by Bakels.
