The co-founder of franchise sandwich chain Subway, Fred DeLuca, has died at the age of 67 of leukaemia.

The franchise sandwich chain just celebrated its 50th anniversary after launching in 1965 in Bridgeport, Connecticut.

In June his sister Suzanne Greco was appointed as president and head of day-to-day operations at the firm.

In 2012 DeLuca visited the UK and announced plans to increase the number of Subway stores in the UK and Ireland to 2,000 by 2015, creating around 6,000 new jobs. In January 2015, the 2000th store in the UK and Ireland was launched in Hemel Hempstead.
