The Instow Kitchen, a new bakery and coffee shop, is opening in north Devon, and everything is 100% gluten-free.

Sarah Logan founded The Instow Kitchen in November. Diagnosed as a coeliac herself in 2001, she said there was very little awareness of gluten-free at the time, and, in her own words: “I couldn’t cook – I had to learn to cook gluten-free cakes, pastries and biscuits so I could still enjoy them.”

Logan has to adhere to a strict gluten-free diet, including avoiding cross-contamination with gluten-containing food. The Instow Kitchen will sell baked gluten-free goods, as well as offering classes including cake decorating and pastry-making.

Since last November, Logan has baked goods from home and sold them to local businesses and at markets, so when the opportunity to open a shop came up, she jumped at the chance.

Feel normal

Logan said: “I want people with coeliac disease or on a gluten-free diet to walk in and feel ‘normal’.”

The Instow Kitchen is scheduled to open on 4 March.
