GALLERY: Bakers make cakes for RNLI

A group of professional hobby bakers has helped to raise more than £1,000 for charity after producing a selection of nautical-inspired cakes.

The 28 cake decorators, known as Sugar Shipmates, baked the creations in support of the Royal National Lifeboat Institute’s (RNLI) Lifeboat Fund’s 150th Anniversary Appeal, which is seeking to raise funds for a Shannon-class all-weather lifeboat.

So far, 30 designs have been submitted as part of the charity event, which runs until September, including a chocolate and sponge 3D lifeboat by Elizabeth Lander, a food and beverage assistant at the RNLI College in Poole.

The mother of four came up with the fundraising idea after hearing the tales of visiting crew in the canteen.

Lander told British Baker: “We’ve made over £1,000 now with people raffling and donating the cakes.

“All the money made goes directly to the RNLI, so there’s no middle man to take away any of the profit, which is important because, as a charity, the RNLI relies on as many donations as it can get.”
