Sutton United’s hopes of FA Cup glory may be pie in the sky, but the non-league’s side reserve goalkeeper Wayne Shaw could face disciplinary action from the Football Association after eating a pie on the bench in the team’s loss to Arsenal.

Shaw admitted on ITV’s Good Morning Britain that he had knowledge of a betting company offering odds of 8-1 against him eating a pie on the bench.

The reserve goalkeeper told Good Morning Britain presenters Piers Morgan and Susannah Reid that the bet was not for himself, but for his friends.

“We’re not allowed to bet, but a few of the lads laid on [a bet], so hopefully there will be a pie and a pint in the local when I get back,” he said.

Shaw later admitted that he “hopes that eating a pie on the bench has made a lot of people in Sutton rich”.

Now, speculation in the national media, citing the FA’s rules on betting, has suggested Shaw could be the subject of an investigation into a breach of those rules. Broader media coverage has also reported that Sutton United is unhappy with the reserve goalkeeper’s pie-eating stunt.

As yet, the FA has made no announcement on the incident and British Baker has contacted Sutton United about the speculation.

Sutton United were knocked out of the FA Cup fifth round by Premier League side Arsenal who triumphed in a 2-0 victory at Gander Green Lane.

The South London side beat Cheltenham Town, AFC Wimbledon and Leeds United to become only the ninth non-league side to reach the fifth round since 1945.

Morrisons have also offered a contract to Wayne Shaw to be part of its Pie tasting team, which would result in a year’s worth of pies to the reserve goalkeeper.

If Shaw accepts the offer he will be given a one-year deal, and will immediately become a part of the backroom staff at Morrisons, slotting in as a Pie taster for the store’s new ranges.
