Keith Hamill is to replace David Beever as non-executive chairman of Mr Kipling owner Premier Foods.

Former Travelodge chairman Hamill is replacing David Beever who, as previously announced, is stepping down after five years in the role.

Hamill will join the Premier board on 1 October as non-exec chairman designate and becomes chairman on 9 November.

Currently a non-executive director of easyJet and Samsonite, Hamill has also been a non-executive director of TP ICAP, Max Property Group and Bagir Group over the past five years.

“Keith’s background in consumer-facing businesses, in addition to his breadth of experience as a chairman and non-executive director, will be invaluable as we continue to focus on our strategic objectives,” said Premier Foods senior independent non-executive director Ian Krieger, who thanked Beever for his “commitment and significant contribution” to the company.

Hamill commented: “I am very pleased to be joining Premier Foods and look forward to working with the team to deliver value from its great portfolio of brands.”

Premier last month announced a 3.1% year-on year-decline in overall sales for the first quarter of the year (13 weeks ending 1 July), driven by a steep drop in sales of grocery lines

However, sales from Premier’s Sweet Treats division – which includes Cadbury and Mr Kipling cakes – rose 3.8% to £48.7m, with branded sales up 1.4%. Sales of own-label sweet treats rose 17.8% to £7.9m following supermarket and discount retailers contract wins.
