A New York cheesecake produced by Bakkavor for Waitrose is being recalled due to fears over plastic contamination.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has issued an alert recalling 540g packs with a sell-by date up to and including 6 March over fears some may contain “very thin strands of plastic”.

“Consumers who have bought these products have been asked to return them to the retailer for a full refund,” a Bakkavor spokesman said. “Food safety is our first priority and once the cause was identified, we worked quickly to rectify it.

“We would like to apologise to any consumers inconvenienced by this recall.”

A statement on the FSA website said: “Waitrose is recalling the above product and has informed its customers. Point-of-sale notices have been displayed in all retail stores that are selling this product. These notices explain to customers why the product is being recalled and tell them what to do if they have bought the product.”

In its product recall notice, Waitrose said customers who had bought packs with the above date codes should not consume them, but return them to Waitrose for a full refund.

No other date codes or products are affected by this recall.
