Bakers across the country are gearing up for National Doughnut Week which begins tomorrow (12 May).

Bayne’s the Family Bakers, Greenhalgh’s, and Warings Bakery are among the businesses taking part in the CSM Bakery Solutions-sponsored event, which will see them make a donation to The Children’s Trust for every doughnut sold.

The dedicated week, which was established by Christopher Freeman of Dunn’s Bakery in 1991, has raised £906,046 for charity over the past 27 years. So far, 132 separate businesses, some of which have multiple shops, have registered to take part this year.

In 2017, hundreds of independent bakers, cafés and shops generated £30,431 for the Tadworth-based trust, which helps children with brain injury and neuro-disability.

Doughnuts, particularly premium ones, are gaining pace in the UK leading to NPD and new shops popping up from Doughnut Time in London to Planet Doughnut in Shrewsbury.

Last month, Dawn Foods expanded its premium doughnut range with two limited-edition flavours Lovely Lemon and Cookie Crush. In November 2017, Cornish wholesale bakery Prima Bakeries launched a collection of premium filled doughnuts, including Strawberry Sprinkle, Cinn Apple, Triple Choc, and Caramel Lace.
