Dawn Foods has partnered with Ireland’s biggest bakery distributor, O’Brien Ingredients, to supply products to a new doughnut retailer in Northern Ireland.
Taboo Donuts, located on Ann Street in Belfast’s Cathedral Quarter, worked with Dawn to develop its menu. It uses over 30 of Dawn’s products including doughnut mixes, icing, fruit, crème glazes, compounds and chocolate decorations to create items such as the Bitter-Sweet Lemon Meringue, Forbidden Fruit with Fresh Orange, and Crunch Time doughnuts.
Other flavours on the menu include Piña Colada and Chocolate Orange Peanut Butter.
Founder Brett McKinney commissioned a ‘state-of-the-art bakery’ in Craigavon, Lurgan, after he spotted a gap in the market. He approached Dawn as an ingredients supplier given its long doughnut heritage, relationship with O’Brien’s, and extensive range of products.
“Unlike Dublin which has seven or eight premium doughnut outlets, Belfast only has a couple, but having lived and worked in Belfast all my life I knew there was a market for authentic doughnuts featuring exciting new flavours served alongside good quality fresh coffee,” said Dawn sales manager for Ireland, Garry Russell.
Taboo opened last month and sold 2,000 doughnuts in its first day.
Taboo has a further 13 stores planned to open across Northern Ireland soon. “This is just the beginning,” McKinney added.
