Hughes Bakery announces Asa Nicholson’s merger

Bradford-based family baker Hughes Bakery is merging with nearby business Asa Nicholson’s.

The move comes as Asa Nicholson’s director Gordon Nicholson considers retirement, and will mean some staff at the firm, which is based in Denholme, near Bradford, will transfer to Hughes Bakery.

From 1 September, sales, distribution, finances and production of bread and morning goods for both businesses will run from Hughes Bakery’s Shipley Close site. Cake and confectionery production will transfer in the coming 50 days.

The businesses will remain separate but operations will be integrated in the same premises. Hughes will be utilising spare production capacity following recent investment into new equipment. The cafe at Asa Nicholson's will continue to operate, but will now serve Hughes Bakery products.

Nicholson said: “I have been looking for an opportunity like this for some time and I wanted to link up with a business where customer service was a high priority. I am confident I have found these qualities in Hughes Bakery and am delighted that my bakery staff will benefit from continuity of employment.”

Hughes Bakery and Asa Nicholson’s are described as family businesses with similar product ranges, customers and local heritage.

Ian Connell, director at Hughes Bakery, said: “In many respects the coming together of Hughes Bakery and Asa Nicholson’s is a no-brainer.

“The businesses are so similar that the integration challenge is relatively straightforward. Acquiring new customers and new transferring staff is a great benefit as it will naturally extend our knowledge and levels of expertise.”
