Sainsbury’s is trialling a scheme to offer its customers hot sourdough pizzas via Deliveroo.

The two-month pilot launched today [Monday 22 July] in five stores across the country. They are: Cambridge; Selly Oak in Birmingham; West Hove in Brighton; and Pimlico and Hornsey, London.

Almost 50 Sainsbury’s products will be available to order, including margherita, meat feast and pepperoni pizzas, sweet and savoury snacks, sides, salads and dips, as well as soft drinks.

The UK’s food delivery market is worth £8.1bn and is set to reach £9.8bn by 2021.

Sainsbury’s said the move would “test customer appetite for ordering takeaways from their local Sainsbury’s counters”.

Clodagh Moriarty, Sainsbury’s group chief digital officer said more and more shoppers were looking for convenient and affordable meals delivered to their doors. “Our trial with Deliveroo brings our great-value hot food direct to customers’ homes,” she said.

“We’re committed to making it as quick and easy as possible for our customers to shop with us and we’ll be listening to their feedback throughout the trial to understand how we can best serve their hot food delivery needs. We’re excited to see what our customers think before deciding if, how and where we go next with the offer.”

Justin Landsberger, Deliveroo’s commercial director said the tie-up with the retailer would bring even more choice to the British tech start-up’s customers.

“At Deliveroo we pride ourselves on providing customers with an excellent selection of food options, catering for every occasion, and this new partnership will allow us to do that,” he added.
