Christmas 2019: new wraps and sandwiches revealed

Food-to-go retailers are unveiling their festive ranges, including sandwiches, mince pies and other sweet treats.

We’ve already seen Christmas ranges from the retailers, including Asda, Tesco & Ocado, Aldi & Booths, Co-op, Fortnums & Waitrose and M&S, Morrisons & Lidl. Brands have also begun rolling out festive NPD.

Now Costa, Pret and more are launching sandwiches and extended vegan menus, alongside new twists on Christmas classics. Old favourites are also making a comeback for the season.

Boots Christmas sandwiches 2019Boots

New to Boots’ vegan range this year are the No Salmon & No Cream Cheese and Vegan Christmas Market sandwiches (rsp £3 each). It has also added the Shapers Turkey & Cranberry Wrap (rsp £3.15) to its lower-calorie range and rolled out a Handcrafted Chocolate Log (rsp £1.20) for dessert. The new additions join previous favourites Brie & Cranberry and Vegan Christmas Feast (pictured). The items are all part of its lunchtime meal deal, which includes a main, snack and a drink for £3.39 or less.

Costa has expanded its vegan range to include the Veggies Under Vests Sandwich (pictured right) and a vegan Rocky Road. The sandwich is filled with falafel and parsnip stuffing, carrot, cranberry sauce, vegan mayonnaise and fresh spinach, and retails for £3.20. Also new this year is the British Turkey & Trimmings Toastie and British Turkey Feast Baguette (both rsp £3.95), which both include turkey breast, British beechwood smoked bacon, sage & onion stuffing and cranberry sauce.

In its sweet offering, the coffee chain has added the Christmas Santa Gingerbread (rsp £1.95), Penelope Polar Bear (rsp from £2.65), Peter Penguin Shortcake (rsp from £1.75) and the White Chocolate & Honeycomb Trillionaires (rsp from £1.95), as well as an exclusive collaboration with Terry’s Chocolate Orange in the form of the Terry’s Chocolate Orange Muffin (rsp from £2.25). Also new for this year is the Free-from Black & White Forest Wreath Cake (rsp from £2.95, pictured left), which was crowned winner of the Free-From category in this year’s Christmas Stars competition.

Eat smoked salmon and beetroot Christmas sandwichEat

New to Eat’s sandwich range this year is the Smoked Salmon, Beetroot & Horseradish on Dark Rye Bloomer (rsp from £4.50, pictured). This contains hot smoked salmon pâté with cold smoked salmon slices, sweet beetroot & horseradish relish and fresh spinach sandwiched between two slices of dark rye bloomer. In the sweet category, Eat has added the Festive Peppermint Brownie (rsp from £1.99), which is a chocolate brownie with a minty twist finished with Christmas tree icing and a gold star.

Making its return is the Roast in a Yorkshire Pudding Wrap (rsp from £4.99), featuring turkey, pork, sage & onion stuffing and bacon, with sage mayonnaise and cranberry sauce, all rolled up in a giant Yorkshire pudding wrap.

Paul's All About the Sprout Christmas baguettePaul UK

Paul has added the Festive Pig Sandwich and All About the Sprout vegan sandwich to its festive line-up this year. Festive Pig Sandwich (rsp £4.65) contains pigs in blankets tucked inside a crusty bacon & onion baguette with Brussels sprouts and chargrilled red onion, topped with a plum & balsamic chutney. 50p from the sale of each Festive Pig Sandwich will be donated to food charity The Felix Project.

All About the Sprout (rsp £4.25, pictured) comprises a colourful combination of houmous, roasted Brussels sprouts, spinach, pickled red cabbage, grilled carrots and chestnuts with orange jam and old English chutney on a freshly baked cranberry, onion and sage baguette.

Christmas sandwiches from Philpotts BakeryPhilpotts

The Christmas range from Philpotts this year will include a Yorkshire Pudding Wrap with a traditional Christmas dinner filling, alongside a selection of hot sandwiches including a Pigs In Blankets Roll. Cold options are the Ham Hock & Barber’s Cheddar Sandwich, Three Bird Sandwich (pictured left) and Christmas Cheese Board Sandwich.

For the first time, Philpotts will also be offering hot and cold vegan sandwich options. The hot option (pictured right) is filled with sage & onion stuffing, crispy onions and roasted vegetables, while the cold sandwich is filled with beetroot houmous, falafel and vegan mayonnaise.

Pret A Manger Christmas Lunch on Gluten-Free BreadPret A Manger

Joining Pret’s existing line-up of classic, vegetarian and vegan Christmas sandwiches is the retailer’s Christmas Lunch on Gluten-Free Bread (pictured). The addition comprises a slice of Pret’s gluten-free bread, which it launched in April, topped with the ingredients of the traditional Christmas Lunch Sandwich. 50p from the sale of each Christmas sandwich will be donated to the Pret Foundation, which helps break the cycle of homelessness.

Pret is also serving up baguette offerings in the form of the Brie, Cranberry & Pistachio and Pret’s Christmas baguettes. Its summer Lobster Roll has returned for the festive season.

In the sweet category, Pret’s Mince Pie, Christmas Tiffin and Melvin the Melting Gingerbread Snowman have made a comeback.

Starbucks Christmas Tree Brownie and Very Merry vegan WrapStarbucks

On Starbucks’ food menu this Christmas are the ’Tis the Season Turkey Sandwich and Festive Feast Panini. For vegetarians and vegans, it has brought back the Vegetarian Brie and Cran-merry Focaccia as well as developing Very Merry Vegan Wrap (pictured right), which comprises crumbled butternut squash fritters, roasted red cabbage and a vegan maple mustard mayonnaise in a beetroot wrap.

For a sweet treat to accompany one of its seasonal coffees, it has the Mince Pie, Christmas Tree Brownie (pictured left), Twinkle and Sprinkle Caramel Cupcake and a Christmas Bauble Chocolate Loaf Cake.

Urban Eat’s Vegan Feast Sandwich is back for another year after it became the brand’s second bestselling line (behind Turkey Feast, also returning) when it made its debut last year. Joining it this year is the Brie & Caramelised Onion Wrap, which contains brie, caramelised onion chutney, sour cream, onion mayonnaise, pumpkin seeds and salad leaves, and the Pigs Under Blankets Panini, which is filled with Lincolnshire sausage, a sage, onion & béchamel sauce, sweet-cure bacon and cranberry sauce. All of Urban Eat’s festive sandwiches are priced between £2.89 and £3.49.
